Christmas Essentials. It is never too soon to start thinking about Christmas, especially if you are just setting up a household, or have downsized or upscaled. There are some basics that can’t be denied.
Indoors
The Tree – There are so many things to consider. Making an event out of shopping at a tree farm or corner stand, or selecting the best artificial tree that will give you quality for the amount of money you spend. With the tree, you will need lights and ornaments.
Many artificial trees come pre-lit, but for the purist, there is nothing like stringing lights throughout the boughs and trunk. Don’t forget to add some battery operated sparkle around doorways, over kitchen cabinets, bookshelves, etc.
Everyone has that favorite ornament that takes center stage, but perhaps some of the others are becoming a bit bedraggled, broken, or boring. Look around to see what is the latest and greatest to bring your home into fashion this year.
Extras – Poinsettias give a room a finishing touch. They come in a number of colors including whites, reds, and pinks. They can be poisonous to pets, so use with caution.
Nativity sets can be displayed on tables or special areas. They are not restricted to under the tree.
Garlands can be strung over mantles or wound around banisters. Tables need candles and small items like pinecones, or a bowl of cranberries or holly.
Pull out the special linens. Switch them around. Use placemats one day and a table runner the next. Add holiday-themed dinnerware and serving pieces and taco Tuesday takes on a new meaning.
Winter snow globes, nutcrackers, music boxes, and all those little things will finish your holiday look.
Outdoors
Front door wreath – Start with the greeting everyone expects…a lovely wreath for the season. Be sure it is hung securely to tolerate any wind or weather that comes along.
Outdoor rated lights can go around the eaves, up pillars, or even across the deck railing. Exterior lighting is not just for the neighbors and passers-by. You need to be able to see them and enjoy the sparkle of the long winter nights. Add some web lighting for shrubbery and you are set.
Extension cords should be rated for outdoor use and be sure to keep moisture out of the contacts between the plugs and sockets.
Don’t forget a cheery bow for the mailbox and you are pretty well set for the season.
