Christmas Decorating. Working or living in an undersized area but still want a lot of holiday spirit? Here are some ideas you might want to try.
Open Shelving – Forget about that elf. There are a lot more things you can do with a bookcase or other open shelving. Look at those miniature villages. You don’t need the whole town; just select a few trees and any other little things that you might fancy. An added bonus is that they will take very little storage room.
Walls – Put a wreath on a wall or a combination of small ones in an interesting design. You can also use inexpensive frames to make wall art out of wrapping paper.
Corners – An unexpected spot can serve as a faux tree if you use a vase with a pine bough or two. Add some ornaments or just tinsel and you are festive.
Pillows – Replace your usual throw pillows with even one or two that have a holiday theme. Use velvet covers to look cozy and will suffice throughout the winter season. Pull out a fleece or knitted throw to put over a chair back or draped over a sofa. It doubles as comfort while you sip your hot cocoa and watch the snowflakes fall.
Repurpose – Use a bowl to hold ornaments or fill a vase with greenery. Decorative bottles and jars can hold imitation poinsettias. Take an empty mason jar and fill it with berries or tiny bells or a combination.
Look up – Suspend snowflakes from the ceiling. This is especially effective down a narrow hallway. It will take some climbing but it will intrigue your guests. No nails required; just some removable tape.
Garlands – Garlands have a lot of flexibility and can be swirled or encircle a mirror. Drape it around a door lintel.
Candles – A warm glow from a candle can make an inviting greeting. If you are worried about an open flame, use some of those battery-operated candles and invest in spray cans of scent to enhance your area.
Chairs – Even a common kitchen chair can participate when you tie a big red bow around the back. If you are creative, add a little fake holly.
Stockings – No mantle; no problem. Consider using an inexpensive curtain rod with stocking holders. Another option would be to place them on a garland swag.
A little imagination goes a long way to making even the smallest areas festive for the holidays.
